Hyderabad: The newly inaugurated Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana state Secretariat building won the prestigious international Green Apple Award for the best aesthetically designed office or workspace.

The Secretariat was not the only feather in the Telangana cap, as four other structures — Mozzamjahi market (heritage – excellence in restoration and reuse), Durgam Cheruvu Cable Bridge (unique design, in bridge category), Integrated Command Control Centre (unique office) and Yadagirigutta Temple (excellent religious structure) — were also announced as winners.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao was elated as the announcement of the awards coincided with the ongoing TS Formation Day celebrations. It is also the first time that a building or structure from India has won the Green Apple Award.

“This reaffirms the futuristic planning in building designs and architecture, and will act as great impetus in the real estate sector in Hyderabad and Telangana,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in London of UK on June 16. Arvind Kumar, the special chief secretary for the MA&UD department will receive the awards on behalf of the state government.

The Green Organization, established in 1994 in London, is an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting best environmental practices around the world. It started the awards in 2016 for an extensive set of categories, ranging from residences to castles, and museums and religious structures to bridges.

Previous winners of the award include iconic buildings like the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in London, the National Museum of Qatar and Jalan Mahkota in Kuantan of Malaysia.
