Visakhapatnam: Emerging as one of the biggest residential hub in the Port City, P.M. Palem is grappling with civic issues in its transition phase.

Along the National Highway with a popular landmark of ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium, the colony is witnessing high growth of residential apartments now. However, it has become a much sought-after colony for middle-income groups wanting to own a home.

Due to non-availability of water in the colony, many are following the rain harvesting system in a religious manner.

GVMC commissioner M. Hari Narayanan had appreciated PM Palem for most of the apartments having made provisions for rainwater recharge pits during the inauguration of Visakhapatnam chapter of Andhra Pradesh Residential Welfare Associations (APFERWAS) recently.

Open drainage system is a major civic issue in the colony. Also, pigs' roaming around in the colony has become a common sight.

"The municipal corporation is doing a good job in terms of cleanliness, but soon have to make underground provision. Moreover, the corporation has to take measure to end pig menace," said P. Dheeraj, a resident of the colony.

"Burglary was a cause of concern earlier some years ago. With increase in population the colony, thefts hardly take place these days," he added.
Residents said that during the monsoon season, water gets clogged in many parts of the colony and become grounds for mosquito breeding.

The residents are happy over access to education and health facilities in the area. The colony is also well connected with the public transport.
