Alappuzha:
Weather continues to be grim in Alappuzha district with no respite from rains on Tuesday. Most of the low-lying areas in Kuttanad, Karthikapally, Chengannur, Cherthala and Ambalappuzha taluks are still under water.
The Achan Kovil and Pamba rivers , which carry water to the district from the upper stream districts like Pathanamthitta and Kottayam are still overflowing. Most of the residents in lower areas in Chengannur taluk including Arattupuzha, Perisserry, Puliyoor, Budhanoor, Mannar, and Pandanad keep high vigil on the update of water levels in dams in Pathanamthitta. Many residents have parked their vehicles in the safe places as a precaution. They have also packed emergency kits awaiting final alert from authorities.
Mini Madhu, whose house located on the bank Pamba flowing through Chengannur town, said they were hoping that nothing would happen like last year. “Though the water level is high in the river, we are still in a relaxed mood. If the shutters of dams in Pathanamtitta will be opened, water will enter our house. We are anyway prepared to face flood situation,” she said.
According to the district administration, as many as 101 relief camps have been opened by Tuesday accommodating at least 20,000 people from 5493 families. Since August 7 until 11, at least 27 houses were completely destroyed and 410 houses partially damaged.
