Kakinada: With floodwaters come snakes, terrify people
Hundreds of reptiles slither into flood-affected areas, enter homes.
KAKINADA: As the Godavari flood waters are receding, the flood hit area people are facing a huge problem in the form of snakes and muddy waters and soils. Hundreds of snakes washed away from the upstream areas, in particular rivulets and ponds in agency areas and reached to upper land areas of residential colonies.
The snake menace is high at the villages of Devipatnam and Konaseema villages. Some of the villagers are killing the snakes and some of the villagers are informing it to the snake catchers. However, a snake lover and also the snake catcher Jampana Ganesh Varma said that he had caught more than 100 snakes in different varieties like Brown Cobra, Rat-Snake, Raktha Pinjari and others in recent floods as these snakes washed away from forests to Konaseema area in the floods.
Mr Varma doesn’t agree with killing of the snake even it a dangerous cobra or other vicious form of snakes. He catches the snakes and leave it in bushes. He said that the snakes would not make any harm to the human beings as they are roaming around the bushes for their survival.
He caught a brown-snake at Amalapuram for two days back and he said that it was around 100 years old. He said that he catches nearly 8 to 10 snakes in Konaseema area daily during this floods. Mr Varma also is giving Ayurvedic treatment to those bitten by snakes. He said that his ancestors were experts in catching snakes and give treatment for snake bites and he learnt the ayurvedic treatment for snake bites from her grandmother Jampana Janakidevi who was a famous in the medicine.
Meanwhile the, people of flood hit villages are getting back to their homes and they are engaging with cleaning the muddy waters and muddy soil. They said that it will take another four to five days to recede the mud waters from the colonies. However, some of the people in Devipatnam mandal are not getting back their villages due to expecting floods again after one week. They want to reside in the shelters set up by the government.
