Kottayam: The Santhanpara police on Monday detained a couple in connection with the murder of Jacob Varghese alias Rajesh, 30, a cardamom estate owner, and his labourer Muthaiah.

The cops, however, refused to reveal the role of Isravel and Kapila, natives of Cheriyar near Rajakkad, who are in their custody.

They are searching for the prime suspect Bobbin, 32, a native of Kuruvila City, who joined Mr Varghese a few days ago.

The body was days old. Residents had seen him driving away the estate owner's SUV found abandoned at Murikkumthotti.

Police told DC that it could not disclose at this stage whether the murder was the result of a theft attempt.

Mr Varghese, a native of Manganam near here, was shot dead and his estate supervisor Muthaiah, 55, died under the impact of a blow from a blunt weapon in his head.

Mr Varghese sustained gunshot injuries in his chest suspected to be from his gun. He was living alone in a house in the middle of the 40-acre estate where their bodies were lying.
