Hyderabad: Breathing toxic air could cause conditions that lead to a person’s death, but records of deaths do not reflect pollution as a factor. With the introduction of the national clean air programme, the Indian Council of Medical Research’s first report on pollution is being debated whether the report must also be considered in the programme.

The new National Environmental Health Profile study is going to be a collaborative effort with the Central Pollution Control Board and the State Pollution Control Board so the data can help control pollution.

For this, the ICMR study can be taken as a basis, stated senior officials in the state pollution control board for effectively understanding the reasons for pollution.

The ICMR report has stated that one out of every eight deaths in 2017 could be attributed to air pollution. The study was done to know the effect of pollution on adults.

The report has also pointed out that the average life expectancy in the country could have been 1.7 times higher if the air pollution level was below the minimum level.

This is the first study where the state-wise burden of the respiratory disease has been taken from various government hospitals across the country.

The data of combined Andhra Pradesh showed that the deaths due to pollution occurred most in the age group of 50 to 55 years.
