Chennai: Insurer asked to compensate woman

Chennai: The Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai, has directed an insurance firm to pay a compensation of Rs 3.02 lakh to a woman who suffered multiple injuries in an accident caused by a car three years ago.
The petitioner, R.Shanthi of Thrisulam, said she was working as a sweeper in Highways and earning Rs 7,000 per month. She said at 11 am on November 25, 2013, she was cleaning an overbridge at Pallavaram when a car going to Chromepet from Thoraipakkam, being driven in a rash and negligent manner, dashed against her. She sustained grievous multiple injuries. Her left leg was fractured. She was rushed to a private hospital and later shifted to GH.
She was hospitalised for 66-days and spent over Rs 92,000 for treatment. She sought a direction to the car owner and insurer of the vehicle, The New India Assurance Co. Ltd, to pay a compensation of Rs 6 lakh for loss of her income and injuries sustained by her. Denying the accident, the Insurance firm sought dismissal of the petition.
The Judge, III Small Causes Court, P.Velmurugan, said considering the nature of injury and disability, the period of treatment, mental and physical suffering, he was inclined to award a compensation of Rs 3.02 lakh, with interest of 7.5 per cent per annum. The tribunal directed the insurance company to pay the sum in two months.
