Bikers ride on footpaths in Hyderabad, short of pavements

A commuter has complained to the traffic police on its Facebook page that a U-turn created at Lakdikapul petrol bunk is causing traffic jams.

Hyderabad: Stuck in traffic jams, some two-wheeler riders have taken to riding on footpaths on many Cyberabad roads, gravely endangering pedestrians.Motorists from JNTU towards Hitec City ride on footpaths, leaving no place for pedestrians and endangering them.

Car maker Maruti Suzuki recently released a road safety index for eight cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

Mumbai topped for pedestrian rights, motor laws and traffic control and Delhi was voted as having the best connectivity, road quality and road infrastructure. Hyderabad was nowhere in the picture.

According to the Cyberabad traffic police, 30 percent of those killed or injured in traffic accidents were pedestrians. In February last year, traffic police booked 236 cases for all types of dangerous driving. Last month, the figure stood at 788.

Cyberabad DCP Traffic A R Srinivas said, “Despite booking 5,000 cases a day against all kinds of violations, the people’s attitude is not changing. From now we, will be very harsh if anyone is caught driving on pavements.”

IT professional B. Dheeraj, 25, advocating cancelling of driving licences of erring drivers and forcing them to take a fresh test. He also wanted more traffic police personnel deployed.
