Madras High Court gives nod for using metal sheets at T Nagar gymnastics club

However, the corporation has issued a notice dated November 29, 2017, opposing the repair work.

Chennai: The Madras High Court has permitted the Theyagaraya Nagar Gymnastics Club in T. Nagar to replace the damaged asbestos sheet with a metal sheet in the building housing the club.

A division bench comprising Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and P. Rajamanickam granted the permission on a petition from the club, which sought to restrain the Chennai Corporation from interfering with the renovation work.

According to the petitioner, the club was a registered society and the premises in question was leased out in its favour by the Corporation of Chennai Employees Co-operative Society. The premises in question was an old building having ACC roof and it got damaged due to fall of a tree and steps were being taken to replace the same with a metal sheet. 

However, the corporation has issued a notice dated November 29, 2017, opposing the repair work. The bench said the petitioner was permitted to replace the damaged asbestos sheet with a metal sheet. It was made clear that the petitioner under the guise of replacing the asbestos sheet with metal sheet, shall not alter the physical features of the superstructure in question and shall not put up any additional constructions, the bench added.
