Class act: Four roads to open tomorrow
The roads will be formally opened on Tuesday at the War Memorial located at the junction of Brigade and Residency Roads.
Bengaluru: Walking and commuting will be a pleasure on four roads in the Central Business District (CBD) that have been developed under the TenderSure project.
Shantinagar constituency MLA N.A. Haris told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday that the four major roads that are part of Phase 1 of TenderSure — Museum Road, Commissariat Road, Richmond Road and Residency Road — have been upgraded to global standards and are ready for public use. The roads will be formally opened on Tuesday at the War Memorial located at the junction of Brigade and Residency Roads.
The war memorial too has been developed. Already, Cunningham and St. Marks' Roads have been thrown open to the public and the new infrastructure has been getting accolades from road users. The Phase I, covering 16.10 km, was taken up at a cost of Rs 80 crore. "The Shantinagar constituency is blessed to have such roads that can boast of international quality. Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George has extended his full support to the project. Further, the CM has announced another 50 roads across the city to be developed under TenderSure specifications," Mr Haris said.
"Since all the major roads connect Namma Metro, the developed pedestrian paths will encourage people to use the rapid public transportation system. The BMTC too is adding feeder services, which will let commuters leave behind their private vehicles at home and use public transportation systems instead," he said.
"Though initially there was stiff opposition for increasing the width of footpaths, the pedestrians are now enjoying walking on these developed pavements. I often take Metro to Vijayanagar and some Western parts of the city to attend private functions. It is a big time saver which is matchless to any other mode of transport. Usually, by road, the same distance takes about an hour. But now with the Metro, it takes just 15 minutes for me. Also, I get to mingle with the people and get a feedback on what they expect from the government and legislators," he said.
"We should be proud to use public transportation. When London's Tube is appreciated, why should our Metro lag behind," he asked.
