IIT Madras ranked 43 among Asian Universities

Chennai: IIT Madras jumped 13 places to be ranked as 43rd among universities in Asia in the QS University Rankings 2016 (Asia)  released on Tuesday.

Along with IIT-Madras, IIT-Kanpur also gained 10 places to be ranked as the 48th university. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru remained India's best university with 33rd rank and it was closely followed by IIT-Bombay (35th rank) and IIT-Delhi (36th rank).

Compared to last year, both these institutions rose 11 and 6 places respectively this year. IISc moved one place up from 34th rank. National University of  Singapore (NUS) has retained its number one position among the Asian Universities.

"We are delighted to be listed in the top 50 Asian Universities. We have been focused on growing and improving our research, teaching and overall curriculum as part of our strategic plan 2020 and it appears to be paying off," said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras.

"For the first time,  all of India's top 10 universities have displayed a positive growth with more institutions appearing in top 50," said Karthick Sridhar, Vice-Chairman, Indian Centre for Academic Rankings and Excellence (ICARE).
"Indian universities have started taking these international benchmarks more seriously, are more focused and are doing all that is needed to improve themselves in terms of education and research," he said.
