Kochi: Nibeya gives life to many in her death
The heart was transplanted on Sanjeev, 30, a native of Nalukody near Changanacherry at Kottayam Medical College hospital on Friday.
Kochi: Several persons will get a new lease of life with the organs of Nibeya Joseph, 25, of Kattappana, Idukki, the victim of a road accident.
Nibeya, who completed her nursing course, was admitted to Aster Medcity here on June 10 in a critical condition after she and her brother Nikhil Joseph were seriously injured in the accident. Her condition worsened and the doctors declared her brain-dead on Friday following which her relatives expressed their willingness to donate her organs, including heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas and cornea. The heart and one kidney were given to the patients at Medical College, Kottayam, and pancreas and another kidney to the patients at Amrita Institute of Medical Science. The liver was transplanted to a patient at Aster Medcity while the cornea was shifted to Giridhar eye hospital.
The organ harvesting was done by a team of doctors led by Dr. Mathew Jacob, consultant, integrated liver care; Dr. Shejoy P. Joshua, consultant neurosurgery; Dr. S. Rommel, senior specialist of Aster Medcity and Dr. Jayakumar of Kottayam Medical College. Nikhil Joseph has been admitted to the intensive care unit.

The heart transplant surgery began by 2.30 pm and lasted till 5.30pm by a team of doctors led by head of the department of cardiothoracic surgery Dr T.K. Jayakumar.
Dr Jayakumar said the patient was under treatment for the last one year for dilated cardio myopathy, a weakness in the muscles of heart. He was in the ICU for the past one week. He said this is fifth transplant undertaken by the MCH. The first heart transplant in the government sector was held at the MCH Kottayam in 2015.
