Hyderabad: The family court in the city on Sunday used the video calling application called Skype to convene court proceedings, in the judge’s chamber, in a divorce case.

The parents of both parties were present and the video conferencing started after proper verification of the IDs and passports of both, the husband and the wife. The judge permitted the use of the video calling technology on the grounds that the wife couldn’t come to India as she was giving her exams in the US. The husband was also unable to come as he has a job in the US.

SC allowed use of tech in March
The divorce was by mutual consent. The facility of video conferencing has proved to be a blessing for couples who are based abroad but were married in India. The provision was introduced in March this year after a judgement by the Supreme Court in a case where the wife, who was in Hyderabad, requested the transfer of the case from the Jabalpur family court to Hyderabad.

The SC said, “We understand that in every district video conferencing is now available. Wherever the facility is available, it ought to be fully utilised.”
