Quilon heritage walk to be held on Sunday
The walk is also open to those who are interested to join on their own. It will focus more on the heritage that bears the legacy of Kollam.
Kollam: 'Heritage Walk Trivandrum,' a group of heritage enthusiasts, will make their first exploratory visit to Kollam town and Tangasseri areas for a 'Quilon Heritage Walk' on Sunday (August 19). Dr. Manoj Kumar Kini, Kollam-based architect and heritage expert, and Dr. Bina Thomas, archaeologist and founder member of 'Heritage Walk Trivandrum,' will facilitate the heritage walk beginning with a presentation on Kollam's history and heritage.
"We have been conducting heritage walk on the last Sundays of a month for the last five years covering historically significant spots in Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari districts. Voluntary groups of heritage enthusiasts should come together in every district of the state to conduct heritage walks," said Bina Thomas. "These walks intend to introduce, educate and spread awareness about the history and heritage of one's own city and district," she added.
"Heritage doesn't mean just the monuments of historic buildings, but the art and culture of a place which we also document. This is not meant for historians or architects alone, but is open to all who are interested in it," Bina added.
Their first visit to Kollam will be exploratory. "People should have a perspective before going for a walk and so we will begin with a presentation on the history of Kollam. We are not looking specifically at monuments, but an understanding on the history and urbanisation of Kollam town and region," she said.
The full-day trip starts at 7 a.m. from the Kerala University Gate in Thiruvananthapuram and is scheduled to end by 6 p.m. based on online registration.
The first 50 applicants will be accommodated in a bus that would cost Rs. 500, including food. The walk is also open to those who are interested to join on their own. It will focus more on the heritage that bears the legacy of Kollam.
