VIJAYAWADA: Twenty convicted prisoners and 175 life convicts were granted special remission on Sunday to mark 75 Years of Indian Independence.
The principal secretary to state home department Harish Gupta issued two orders, 121 and 122, granting special remissions.
As part of the Azad Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, the government proposed to give special remission to certain categories of prisoners and release them in three phases -- on 15th August (75th Anniversary of Independence day), 26th January, 2023 (Republic Day) and 15th August, 2023, on the ground they maintained good conduct during their term in prisons.
Director general of prisons and correctional services, AP, Mangalagiri, has sent a prison-wise list of convicted prisoners who fulfilled the conditions.
The standing committee has reviewed the list of eligible prisoners as per the guidelines issued and recommended the names of twenty convicted and 175 life convicted prisoners for special remission of sentence.
