Stop memo to fragile' resort at Kuttiamvayal

KALPETTA: The revenue department has issued stop memo for a resort at Kuttiamvayal near Padinjarethara where a minor landslide had occurred during the recent floods and which was kept a secret. Local people alleged that hectic construction activities were on in the site to cover up the landslide.
It is to be recalled that there were series of landslides in the district due to the heavy rain that lashed across it. Though public had raised much hue and cry over the construction works underway atop a hillock, the revenue department failed to take any action, it was alleged. It was media reports that forced the revenue department to swing into action.
The construction was partially damaged due to the landslide where the construction of a retaining wall was on. Mananthavadi sub collector N.S.K. Ume-sh told reporters here that the village officer had already served the resort owner with the stop memo. No construction works would be allowed on the spot till further inspection, he said, adding that further construction works would be allowed only after inspection by a geologist.
Meanwhile green activists have deman-ded that all the permits cleared earlier for construction of resorts on ecologically fragile spots should be repealed.
“In the wake of wid-espread landslides, long stretches of fissures developing on earth and landslips, it is time for second thoughts on the construction permits granted”, said Wayanad Prakrithi Samraksh-ana Samithy in a press release.
