Gold leaf award: Korakundah corners glory for 15th year

COONOOR: The Korakundah Tea Estate near here is on cloud nine as it made it 15 in a row in the Golden Leaf India Awards: Southern Tea competition (TGLIA), a joint initiative of the Tea Board of India and the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI).

While the TGLIA-2019 awards were presented to winners in various categories on Saturday,  the Korakundah Tea Estate, which is part of the United Nilgiris Tea Estates Company, bagged four awards in organic tea category.

Factory manager, Korakundah Tea Estate, C. Ananthakrishnan, who received the awards, while speaking to DC, said that this year Korakundah organic tea won two awards in organic leaf and fannings category, and also two awards in organic green tea leaf and fannings category.

Stating that this is the 15th consecutive year, Korakundah organic tea was bestowed with honour and award, Ananthakrishnan said that from the year 1993, the Korakundah tea estate took to fully organic tea cultivation and production. Ever since the TGLIA awards were instituted in 2005, the Korakundah Tea Estate made it a habit of winning the award in the organic tea category, he said.

'Adherence to best cultivation, growing and production methods and quality control consciousness are the mantras behind Korakundah organic tea making waves.

Nearly 90 to 95 percent of the organic tea produced in the estate is exported. There is a growing demand for organic tea in western countries also," he pointed out.
