Eluru: Eluru MP Maganti Venkateswara Rao on Tuesday cleaned portraits of leaders and walls of a library with the help of students and expressed concern over the condition of these portraits including that of late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru covered with dust and the poor maintenance of sanitation at meeting hall and district library.

As part of the Library Week celebrations, the MP arrived at the district library here and noticed the dust on portraits that were not cleaned and hanging on the wall for so long. There was also no cleanliness in the meeting hall with cobwebs all around. He called upon the library staff and asked why they had failed to clean up the premises knowing the fact that they were organising the 50th library week celebrations. Many people were expected to visit the library. He said that the ambience in the meeting hall was very poor and the readers were finding difficulty in reading while sitting in the library.

After some time, he picked up a cloth and broom stick and started cleaning portraits and the walls. He was joined by the students. Later, he exhorted the library staff to draw inspiration from students who cleaned the library rooms to ensure maintenance of cleanliness. Collector K. Bhaskar called upon the students to inculcate the habit of reading books to acquire knowledge adding that using mobile phones to watch films and videos would not give them any knowledge. He advised them to read books available in digital format.

He assured efforts to ensure library cess being collected from municipalities and gram panchayats to reach the libraries straight away by making certain chances in the computer programmes as the libraries were unable to get access to funds promptly even though library cess was being collected regularly.
