Rani has been working at Nims from 1990 and studied hospital administration at the NIMS college.
Hyderabad: Depressed at not being promoted while her juniors moved ahead, nurse K. Nirmala Rani of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences slit her throat and hands with a blade outside the office of medical superintendent Dr N. Satyanarayana on Thursday. Her radial arteries, major arteries in the forearms, in both arms were cut and she underwent emergency surgery. She is now stable in the intensive care unit of Nims.
Sources said Ms Rani, 47, store incharge at the surgical department wanted to be promoted as assistant manager and had petitioned the administration.
Her three juniors have been promoted deputy manager. Ms Rani has been working at Nims from 1990 and studied hospital administration at the NIMS college.
A senior doctor at Nimz said Ms Rani had applied for leave on Thursday and went to the hospital to meet the director and medical superintendent. “She waited outside the office of director Dr K Manohar but he was busy. She then went to the chamber of medical superintendent Dr N. Satyanarayana who was taking his lunch break, His office asked her to wait. Upset that no one was willing to meet her, she slit her throat and hands. There was blood everywhere,” he said.
Her husband Maraiah scuffled with administration officials. He alleged that the junior store managers were favoured by the administration. Nursing Association convener Laxman Rudawat said there was a move by the administration to abolish the post of assistant manager, the one Ms Rani was aiming for. “When she is due for promotion why must she be shifted.”
Nurses protested outside the chamber of Dr Manohar demanding promotions and have declared a strike on Friday.
