CM, leaders pay homage to slain Tamil Nadu police inspector

After a tribute from the police band, CM Edappadi K Palanisamy laid a wreath on Periyapandian followed by the Deputy CM and other political leaders.

Chennai: The mortal remains of the City Police Inspector S Periyapandian who, was shot dead in Rampura village of Pali district in Rajasthan by suspected burglars, was brought to the city on Thursday by air and then taken to his native village in Tirunelveli district. The who’s who of the state, including Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy CM O. Panneerselvam, leader of opposition MK Stalin and other political leaders, top bureaucrats and police officers paid respects to the slain cop at the airport.

While police had earlier said that the body would be directly airlifted from Jaipur to Chennai and would reach the city during the early hours of Thursday, the body was transported via Ahmedabad and then to Chennai and reached the airport around 12.30 pm. An area was already demarcated near Gate no.5 for leaders to pay respects to Periyapandian. Deputy CM O.Panneerselvam was among the earliest to reach the airport.

After a tribute from the police band, CM Edappadi K Palanisamy laid a wreath on Periyapandian followed by the Deputy CM and other political leaders.

The body was kept there until 4 pm and was taken to the aircraft around 5 pm. The spicejet flight to Madurai which was supposed to depart by 6 pm was delayed and eventually left around 6.44 pm.

From Madurai, the body will be transported by road to Periyapandian’s native village in Sankarankoil taluk, Tirunelveli district.

Anna Nagar Deputy Commissioner Dr. Sudhakar, Assistant Commissioner John Sundar and an Inspector will be traveling with Periyapandian’s body to his native village, according to a senior police officer.

Periyapandian, who was serving as Maduravoyal Inspector was leading a team to solve a robbery case in Chennai. Another inspector, Muni Sekar, sustained serious bullet injuries and was admitted in a hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be critical, but stable.
