Chennai: Elderly woman killed as car collides with MTC bus

The accident caused severe traffic jam on the beach road which lasted for nearly an hour.

Chennai: A senior citizen was killed and her granddaughter was injured after the call taxi in which they were travelling collided head-on with an MTC bus on the Kamaraj Salai, on Friday by 10:30 am.

The accident happened when a MTC bus tried to overtake a van and rammed a call taxi coming in the opposite lane.

Police said a speeding MTC bus, route number 109, plying between Kovalam and Broadway tried to overtake a van near the Kannagi statue, when it hit the cab.

The cab was heading towards Adyar carrying two passengers Hemavathi (70) and her granddaughter, Anandhavalli (25).

All the three inside the cab sustained injuries. The accident caused severe traffic jam on the beach road which lasted for nearly an hour.

The injured were rushed to the Royapettah government hospital where Hemavathy was declared brought dead, while the other two were given medical care, said police.

Anna square traffic investigation police registered a case of negligent driving on MTC driver Rajendran, who fled the spot.

Anandavalli who sustained minor injuries was discharged. The cab driver identified as 31-year-old Venkatesh, is critical and under treatment.  Investigations are on.
