Thiruvananthapuram: Mayor V.K. Prasanth on Tuesday launched the renovation project of the Thettiyar Canal, one of the main sources of clean water in the city. The project, which will be jointly implemented by Haritha Kerala Mission and the Corporation, will clean up the canal stretch from Vetturoad to Kazhakoottam in the first phase.

The plan of the authorities is to clean up and rejuvenate water sources and canal network in the state capital. Owing to waste dumping, every water body in the Corporation limits is in a polluted state.

The workers of Ayyankali Urban Employment Guarantee Schemes will be used for cleaning up the stretch which is clogged with plastic waste and other vegetation. However, the civic body is not planning to remove encroachment in the bank of the canal in the first phase.

Machinery including JCB will be used for removing garbage from the canal.
