Chennai: DMDK propaganda secretary and Assembly whip V.C. Chandrakumar on Monday threatened to move contempt of court proceedings against the Assembly Speaker, if the suspended MLAs were not allowed to participate in the budget session beginning Tuesday.

After handing over a copy of the Supreme Court order setting aside Speaker’s decision to suspend six DMDK MLAs for a year in Assembly secretariat on Monday, Mr Chandrakumar said that even after the apex court order the legislators were not allowed to use the MLA office and quarters in the city.

“We are not allowed to exercise the rights of MLA despite the court order,” he said, adding that they were planning to attend the budget session on Tuesday. “If we are not allowed to participate, we will move contempt proceedings in the SC,” he warned.

The six MLAs — Mr Chandrakumar, R. Mohanraj, S.R. Parthiban, L. Venkatesan, C. H. Sekar and K. Thinakaran — were suspended for a year by an Assembly resolution on March 31 last year for breaching privilege of the Assembly.
