Chennai: In a bid to reach out to young voters and make the election process a big success, the public (election) department has decided to launch a social media campaign in a big way, election officials told DC.

Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni will soon write to all recognised political parties, particularly Dravidian majors asking their leaders to tweet and join the election commission’s social media campaign. For instance, AIADMK and DMK are active in social media with lakhs of followers asking political leaders to share the web-link of CEO elections. When political party fans and followers share EC poll activities, more awareness can be created.

A meeting with top representatives of  Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter is to be conducted shortly.

Similarly, Google had also been requested to do some social responsibility work for the elections under which voters can soon download the app through Google play and trace their polling booths using Google maps by typing their EPIC number, an informed official said.
