Experts inspect 2nd corridor in Rameswaram temple

The corridors of the Rameswaram are world famous for their vast dimensions.

RAMESWARAM: A 3-member team of technical experts including two from the IIT-Madras on Thursday extensively examined the condition of the unfinished second ‘prakaara (corridor)’ of the ancient Sri Ramanathaswamy temple in this pilgrim-island.

The team members, including the IIT-Madras civil and structural engineering experts, Ms. Karpagam and Ms. Tamizhini, besides the state government’s Madurai zone executive engineer Ms. Vennila, took pictures , made an exhaustive study of the second corridor under the directive of the State HR and CE department Commissioner, sources said. 

The corridors of the Rameswaram are world famous for their vast dimensions. According to available historical information, construction work on the second ‘prakaara’ of the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple had begun some 700 years ago during the reign of the Vijayanagara kings.  However, the renovation work remained incomplete till date, and it is in this backdrop the State HR and CE department Commissioner who paid a visit to the temple last year, had directed the examination of the second corridor in a bid to complete the work.
