Hyderabad: Harassed couple attempts suicide
The video was allegedly shot by Bajrang Dal activists.
Hyderabad: A young couple from Siddipet district that was attempting suicide after a video was spread on social media about their relationship by a group of Bajrang Dal activists on February 14 was stopped by the Lake police at Hussainsagar lake.
Lake police station inspector K. Dhana Laxmi said that the couple was seen on the Tank Bund at about 9.30 am. They were crying and about jump into the lake, she said.
Upon noticing them, a police patrol prevented them from jumping and took them to the lake police station. During counselling, the couple, both aged 22 and residents of Siddipet district, said they were at Komati Cheruvu on Thursday when some unidentified persons claiming to be Bajrang Dal activists took their videos and made them viral on social media.
Learning about the videos, the couple got frightened as they belong to different communities and feared that their families might object to their relationship. They came to Hyderabad on a two-wheeler at night.
“They were unable to face their family members about the relationship. With the video going viral, they decided to end their lives. The couple was counselled and handed over at the Siddipet commissioner of police’s office to take legal action against the activists,” Ms Laxmi said.
In another incident that took place at Kanlakoya Oxygen Park in Medchal, the police traced a couple to Medak and brought them back to the city. The couple was handed over to the family members.
The couple had got married willingly and left home. They agreed to stay with their parents until they completed their education and settled in their lives by securing jobs, a police official said.
