Japan's major cities like Tokyo boast of WiFi facilities across the city and Chennai could take a leaf out of it and replicate the success mantra.

Thiruvananthapuram: Smart City project proposal is almost complete and will be finalised at a special council meeting on Friday.

The pan-city proposal includes many projects that are tangible and not just a mobile/ICT application. Energy-efficient street lighting, a smart bus stop with wifi in every ward and CCTV surveillance to improve security are some of the tangible project ideas.

IT-enabled governance, smart water metering, intelligent traffic, quick response team (to respond to emergencies), and ICT application for solid waste management are ideas proposed for pan-city development.

The area which was chosen for smart city’s Area-Based Development includes Fort, Chalai, Palayam, Thampanoor, Vanchiyoor, Sreekanteshwaram, Vazhuthacaud and Thycaud.

The heritage package includes conservation of Chalai market, various heritage monuments as well as Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The premises of the temple will be renovated. An open-air theatre at Putharikkandam maidanam also has been suggested.

The road in front of Sree Chithira Tirunal Park inside Fort will be developed into a handicrafts street. This as well as the Manaveeyam Veedhi will be conserved as cultural streets. Walkways connecting all tourist centres in the central business district including Fort, Chalai market and the temple has also been suggested.

Another suggestion is improving warehousing facilities inside Chalai market and improving the East Fort bus depot. Information kiosks to help locals and tourists with information regarding services offered by the Corporation, accommodation facilities, bus and train timings has been proposed to be set up at various places.
