Chennai: Over 25 years after instituting a centre in the name of his mentor C.N. Annadurai, popularly known as Anna, the University of Madras is recognising the leadership role played by former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran by creating a professorship chair in his name.
To establish a legacy of MGR, a proposal with a endowment fund of Rs 25 lakh was given by Saidai Duraisamy, former Mayor of Greater Chennai and founder of Manidhaneyam Free IAS Academy to the university.
The syndicate of the university is likely to approve the decision at its meeting scheduled on Friday. The vice-chancellor will select the professorship from the expert panel submitted by the head of the department. It will be called as "Bharath Ratna Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Professorhip Chair".
The duration of the appointment in each discipline shall be for a period of two years with a provision to extend by one year. Further, the university likely to submit a detailed inquiry report on missing answer scripts from Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in the syndicate meeting.
Around 500 answer scripts including the answer scripts related to the examination scam at IDE had mysteriously disappeared from the record room in the first week of March.
