Server problems hit aspiring engineers

Chennai: Anna University’s maiden effort to issue online applications for engineering admissions from this year was marred by server problems on the first day as students were unable to open the website till evening.
Many anxious parents and students rushed to Anna University’s Guindy campus on Friday to get the printed applications. But they were told by university staff that applications would only be issued online this year.
Sathish, a parent from Tiruvallur said, “I tried many times to access the online application in Anna University’s website. As it was not opening, I came to the university with the hope of getting the printed application form.” Many students from Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, unaware of online registration, were seen enquiring about the printed application forms in the university campus.
Sources in the university said the delay was caused due to server problems. The server was not equipped to handle the huge traffic on the first day and online applications were accessible only after 6 pm.
University officials ascribed the delays to improvement activities. “We added some more features for making the online applications more user-friendly,” they said.
The university had announced that applications for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2016 can only be registered online from this year and printed application forms won’t be issued.
“The new initiative of online registration of engineering applications has not reached the rural and poor students. When it was announced, the students were writing the exams. The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions Committee should take measures to publicise it,” said Sami.
