Palakkad: Only the former sub-inspector at Walayar station has been found to be at fault in the departmental inquiry into the alleged police laxity  in the mysterious death of two minor sisters at Walayar. The elder one, 11,  was  found hanging inside her single-room house at Attappalam at  Walayar on January 13 and the younger, 9, in the same room on March 4.

According to the investigation officer, the SI did not give proper attention to the post-mortem report which had hinted at the elder sister being subjected to sexual torture.

“The then SI P.C. Chacko did not take the report seriously and failed to conduct a proper inquiry into the possibility of sexual torture. A junior doctor had conducted the post-mortem and mentioned about the infection found around the anus of the  girl caused either due to anal intercourse or piles. But the SI,  who is now under suspension, did not take  the matter seriously,” Palakakd narcotic cell DySP M.J. Sojan, who is inquiring  into the alleged police lapses,  told DC.

The SI could have held more discussions with the doctors or his senior officer on the post-mortem report. But  he did not do that and only after the younger one was found dead  he started probing into the possibility of the girls being raped, he noted.

A proper police inquiry into the first incident could have prevented the death of the younger sister.

Two relatives of the  girls, V. Madhu and ‘Kutti’ Madhu,  along with Shibu of Rajakakd in Idukki and Pradeep of Cherthala are the accused and they are presently lodged in jail.

Cases have been registered against them under POCSO and the Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Castes Act.

“We are yet to confirm the possibility of the accused murdering the girls and the chargesheet will be filed as soon as we get the final forensic report on the death of the second child. The first child had  committed suicide and we are inquiring into the possibility of the accused hanging the second  after giving her sedatives,” said Mr Sojan.
