BENGALURU: After the formation of the committee, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) visited Varthur and Agara lakes early Sunday, after their initial visit of Bellandur on the previous day.

After the problems of Varthur were highlighted by the volunteers of Whitefield Rising, the NGT has decided to prepare a report along with Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and other civic agencies by April 20.

According to Whitefield Rising, “The team members of the NGT were shocked on seeing the civil works by the Minor Irrigation Department, to lay pipelines at the Varthur Kodi junction on Whitefield Main road to supply treated water to Kolar.”

The froth emanating from the lake has always been one of the major health concerns. It was pointed out to the NGT mandated team that due to the continuous inflow of the waste, the groundwater has been polluted. The issue of the dumping of construction waste from trucks and the encroachment were brought to the team’s notice.

On Saturday, the committee led by senior advocare Raj Panjwani inspected Bellandur lake, and asked BDA and BBMP to submit their reports regarding the cause of recent fire incidents. The team was apprised about the rampant encroachment of the lake by illegal migrants and inaction on part of the state government regarding wetland development.
