NHRC: Botched eye surgeries violate rights

The commission said this was a violation of right to health of the patients.

Hyderabad: The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports of seven persons losing an eye each after botched up cataract surgeries at the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital and issued notice to the government. The commission said this was a violation of right to health of the patients.

The NRHC issued notices to Telangana chief secretary Rajiv Sharma and DGP Anurag Sharma, seeking detailed reports on the botched up eye surgeries at the SD Eye Hospital in two weeks.

The commission observed: “The patients were never told what went wrong with their surgery. A case under Section 338 IPC is reported to have been registered against the hospital.”
