Bengaluru: The 70th Independence Day was celebrated with pomp across the city on Monday.  At the Bengaluru University campus, Vice-Chancellor Dr B. Thimmegowda hoisted the national flag. He requested the students not to waster their time with computers and games, and to instead become responsible citizens of the country.

KSRTC celebrated the day at its central office in Shanthinagar. Cultural activities and sports competitions were held for employees and employees’ children. Chess, shuttle badminton, table tennis, musical chair, memory test, drawing, essay writing, breaking the pot and carom were organised. KSRTC MD Rajender Kumar Kataria distributed the prizes. Actor Dilip released the audio of his new film Crazy Boys on this occasion. FKCCI also celebrated at its office on KG Road.

Around 19,000 students from 167 schools washed their hands in their respective schools at the same time to create awareness on hygiene. Personal hygiene, hand washing at critical times (after defecation and before meal) and use of toilets are the key elements that were taught as part of the event, which was organised by NEHA, an NGO that is supported by Toyota Kirloskar Motors.

The JD Institute of Fashion Technology celebrated the day on the college campus, which was decorated with Independence Day theme. Cultural programmes too were part of the programme.
