IIT-M punishment for research scholar attacker not enough, say students
The IIT Madras Hostel disciplinary committee has informed the students that Manish was punished.
CHENNAI: Members of Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle in IIT Madras have termed the punishment for the student who attacked the research scholar for participating in a beef festival is the light one.
As part of the disciplinary action against the student Manish Kumar Singh, the premier institute has recently banned him from the hostel zone and withdrawn his boarding facility for six months.
Sooraj R, a PhD scholar in Aerospace department of IIT Madras was attacked by a group of students led by Manish for participating in a beef festival inside the campus on May 30.
He sustained the serious injury on his eye and face in the attack.
It became a big controversy and the institute has formed the disciplinary committee to enquire into the issue. After two months, the IIT Madras Hostel disciplinary committee has informed the students that Manish was punished.
“The serious reprimand is nothing but a serious warning. The student was already reprimanded once and for two warnings they would be ousted from the hostel. Given the serious nature of the injury, we demanded for the suspension of six months from the Institute itself. But he was let off with the light punishment,” APSC members said.
