Bengaluru: Flood alert on banks of Cauvery river

Mysuru : A flood alert has been issued on the banks of  the river Cauvery and low lying areas downstream of  its reservoirs with rains continuing to lash the Wayanad and its catchment area. The  reservoirs of the Cauvery basin continue to receive heavy inflow and  release large quantities of water.

Traffic has been banned on the Hemmige bridge connecting T Narsipur and Talakadu after it was submerged in flood water. Chief Minister Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy held a review meeting on the flood situation on the coast and Malnad and the drought in North Karnataka on Wednesday, according to official sources, Heavy rainfall is likely over the next five days as well in south interior Karnataka covering Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Shimoga districts, according to the Karnataka State Natural Resource Monitoring Centre.

The rainfall is likely to touch 204.4mm  on August 16 and 115.5mm on August 17 and cross 65mm on August 18, 19 and 20. Kodagu recorded 113.47 mm of rain between 8.30am on August 14 and 8 .30am on August 15. The heavy rain in the district led to an inflow of 36,179 cusecs into the  Harangi reservoir, which released 36,866 cusecs into the river leading to KRS on Tuesday. KRS received the highest inflow of 99,896 cusecs  and released  1,05,579 cusecs into the river. While Kabini received 54,760 cusecs, and released 50,000 cusecs, Hemavathi received 42,607 cusecs and released 49,750 cusecs.

The  Kabini reservoir had filled up on  June 15,  the Harangi  on August  7 and the KRS and Hemavathi on July 14.
