Kozhikode: The city corporation council meeting on Monday resolved to ban all types of disposable cups and plates, plastic straws used in juice parlours and other outlets at the earliest.

"The complete ban of such products is because of the difficulty in disposing of these materials largely being used," said mayor Thottathil Raveendran.

"Health risks from such products are on the higher side. They provide a breeding space for mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya. Already the corporation had discussed this issue."

The mayor also directed the health standing committee chairman K.V. Baburaj to direct the vendors to find alternatives to these plastic disposables.

The council meeting also discussed the survey to be conducted on the restriction of the vehicles through the renovated SM Street.

The council members wanted to discuss with them before deciding on this.

The meeting discussed to complete the works involved in declaring Kozhikode Corporation as an elderly-friendly city.

As part of the initiative, it had collected necessary details of the senior citizens through its 543 Anganwadis.
