Address our issues, rural kids urge President Ramnath Kovind

Krishnagiri: Hema Shree, took her first flight of her life and landed in New Delhi to meet the President of India, Ramnath Kovind, on children’s day.

The 11-year-old girl student of the Gurukulam global residential school (GGRS),Denkannikottai, and five others of the same school, were among a few others across the country, selected to celebrate children’s day with President Ramnath Kovind.

Hema Shree and her team were the first to represent a school from the region facing issues like female infanticide, early marriage of girls and school dropouts.“We were the first school to represent from our region in the event organised for us at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on November 14,” Hema Shree told reporters.

Hema Shree added, “Being a girl, I explained to our President the issues faced by people like us in remote places like ours, and requested him to address issues faced by girls in getting their educational rights.”

Hemanth (12), who is part of the GGRS team, said, “We could not believe that we are at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Our other representation to the President was of safety of children in rural villages. We took up this issue, due to the tragic death of Sujith.”

He added, “The President listened to us and was also very much impressed because of our interest in social issues, especially children welfare.”

The children we asked how they got this big opportunity had said that they are aware that the President met children every year on children’s day. Hence, they had applied to the president’s office seeking a meeting with him.

Their request was acknowledged with an invitation to meet him on November 14, giving them a chance not only to meet President Ramnath Kovind, but also to spend a day at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
