Assam: Youth arrested for giving death threat to minister Atul Bora
Guwahati: The Assam Police on Thursday detained a youth in connection with giving death threats to cabinet minister and senior Asom Gana Parishad leader Atul Bora.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police had on Tuesday filed a case and initiated a probe over Mr Bora receiving a threat to his life on social media.
The Director General of Police Mr G P Singh said that a 31-year-old youth from Bamun Moran village in Gaurisagar of Sivasagar district has been picked up for his Facebook post, which allegedly threatened the Agriculture Minister of the state Mr Bora. “The detention is based on substantial evidence,” he said in a social media post.
Mr Bora is also the president of Asom Gana Parishad, an ally of the ruling BJP-led coalition government in the state.
Earlier on Tuesday, in the comments section of a Facebook post of a regional news portal, a user posted a threat against Mr Atul Bora. The threat mentioned that a bomb was planted in his quarters and that this was done by the outlawed ULFA-I.
The user who made the threat had the name 'Pranash Shandilya'.
Soon after it came to light, Assam DGP GP Singh said that the CID has been directed to initiate criminal proceedings against the user and take lawful action.
“No such threat would be acceptable against elected representatives as it threatens the democratic polity,” the DGP said in his reaction.
