Anantapur records coldest nights
The legal metrology department noticed a drastic dip in mercury levels.
Anantapur: The district last week recorded the lowest temperature of 5.7 degree Celsius in the current winter season, while the maximum temperature touched 49 degrees in the summer season. Agali mandal headquarters recorded 5.7 degree Celsius, while Anantapur headquarters witnessed 11.1 degree Celsius as the lowest records since three decades.

Anantapur generally has moderate hot climatic conditions and is facing desertification. It witne-ssed huge variation from normal in the mercury levels this December.
Scientist Dr Malleswari told DC that 5.7 degree Celsius was recorded on December 8 at Agali Auto-matic Weather Station and 11.1 degree Celsius on December 9 at Anantapur headquarters.“These are lowest temperatures recorded since three decades as per re-cords,” he official said, attributing cyclone Vardah for the current weather conditions.
A fluctuation of over 6 degrees of temperature was recorded this year as against normal temperature of an average temperature of 17.7 degrees during peak December. “Mercury levels dropped to just 9.74 degree Celsius on December 23, 2010, but this time, Agali reported 5.7 degrees Celsius on December 8,” she said.
Temperature levels were recorded at maximum of 29.6 degrees and minimum average of 17.7 degrees in the third week of December. K. Narasaiah from Madakasira said the area was located at the highest level above sea level in the state and was popular as ‘Ananta Ooty’. “We witnessed both record maximum and minimum temperatures this year,” he said.
