Bengaluru: Apartment fire safety under BBMP lens
BBMP officials will soon meet members of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to discuss ways to implement safety measures.
Bengaluru: To ensure fire safety measures are in place in every apartment and residential building in the city, BBMP officials will soon meet members of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to discuss ways to implement safety measures.
A senior fire officer pointed out that most of the apartments do not have fire safety equipment which is laxity on the part of building owners and managements."We received numerous complaints of absent fire safety equipment. We brought this to the notice of senior officials, who will take up measures in the coming days." He said, "Fire safety preparedness is important as majority of the fire accidents take place in residential complexes. People staying in apartments should ensure that their building owners or RWAs install fire safety equipment. "
Mayor Sampath Raj said, "We will soon convene a meeting with RWAs and impress upon them the importance of fire safety measures. A joint team of BBMP and Fire Department officials will visit apartments and residential buildings and set deadlines to install fire safety equipment. If the deadlines are not met, strict action will be taken." A senior BBMP officer said that any residential building with more than 10 houses should have fire extinguishers. "Not just fire safety equipment, emergency numbers too should be displayed on notice boards. In case of accidents, residents can dial the emergency numbers and alert authorities concerned.”
