Hyderabad: Biometric machines will be installed in government teaching hospitals to record the attendance of medical interns, according to in-charge director of health and medical education Dr Ramesh Reddy. This was being done following complaints that some students were skipping the mandatory internship.
This newspaper had reported on January 15 that 50 per cent of medical students were found to be not attending their internship and were keeping away prepare for entrance exams and competitive exams.
The truancy was as high as 50 per cent in various departments as also at the teaching hospitals, Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital.
Following this, Dr Ramesh Reddy constituted a committee in every hospital to check on the attendance of students. The committee will scrutinise the attendance of the students before issuing internship certificates.
Dr Ramesh Reddy said, “Those who have got the certificate by following wrong practices and fraudulent means will face action as per the Medical Council’s code of ethics.”
The department has stated that registering biometric attendance is compulsory and whoever is found short of attendance will not be given postings. No certificate will be issued till the completion of internship.
