Telangana not to collect road tax from electric vehicles
Centre asked all state governments to issue green permits.
Hyderabad: There will be no road tax on electric vehicles in Telangana state, the government has decided. The Central government is promoting electric vehicles across the country and is providing several concessions to manufacturers and users. It has asked all state governments to do away with road tax for these vehicles and issue green permits. The Telangana state government has complied with this suggestion.
Several factors determine the road tax for vehicles such as the age of vehicle, its make, manufacturer, fuel type, length and width of vehicle, engine capacity, purpose (personal or commercial), and place of manufacture. The seating capacity and number of wheels are also used to calculate road tax.
The state government levies a road tax equivalent to a certain percentage of the original vehicle cost, ensuring that taxation is uniform across the different vehicle categories.
The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission has fixed the voltage level power tariff use by electric vehicles.
The unit cost under low tension source is Rs 6 per unit and under high tension source the unit cost is Rs 6 with time-of-day charges applicable. The time slot tariff is from 6 am to 10 am and from 6 pm to 10 pm, the unit cost at these slots is '7. The unit cost from 10 pm to 6 am is Rs 5. The unit cost during other slots is '6.
Telangana state transport, and roads & buildings department principal secretary Sunil Sharma confirmed that the state government will not collect road tax on electric vehicles. He said the central government will reimburse the state government for the loss of road tax.
