Nellore: A protest on Monday by students of the ZP High School, located on the traffic-heavy Podalakur Road here, spurred Nellore rural segment legislator Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy to summon police, municipal and Roads and Building (R&B) officials to the school on Tuesday. They promised to take measures to enable the 1,000-odd students of the school to cross the road without fear.

According to authorities, 15 to 16 accidents involving students and their parents occur outside the school every month. A student who recently suffered an injury near the eye is yet to recover fully.

R&B officials said that they could not place a speed breaker at the spot as this required permission from the Road Safety Committee, but they said that they would put a zebra crossing, and sign boards indicating that the area was a school zone. Police officials posted a traffic constable outside the school during peak hours.

Mr Sridhar Reddy, thanking the officials for their prompt action, said that he would write to the collector, who is chairman of the Road Safety Committee, regarding a speed breaker in front of the school.

He also asked the headmaster K. Koteswar Rao to prepare estimates for levelling the playground, increasing the height of the compound wall and repair of the toilets. Mr Reddy said that he would seek the help of philanthropists if the government was not able to provide funds for the school's basic infrastructure and sports kits.

Mr Koteswar Rao, teachers and students thanked the legislator for taking the initiative to affect these measures after their protest.
