Chennai: It’s common to see parents shelling out large sums of money to ensure their children get a good education. However, parents at the Government Primary school in Urapakkam in Kanchipuram district presented the school with tables, chairs and other necessary equipment as ‘kalvi seer varisai’ (gift to school).

Dressed in silk sarees, parents and some teachers of the school, set out carrying trays with notebooks, pencil boxes and other items. Apart from the trays, two tables, chairs and three blackboards and a drinking water cooler, all together worth `1 lakh, were handed over to the school headmistress Indira Devakirubai.

The elementary school in Arundathipalayam prepared to give the ‘kalvi seer’ so that the materials can be used for the new academic year, they said.

The parents, all of whom are either farmers or daily wage labourers, were able to collect Rs 1 lakh and purchase the required items, one parent said.

Headmistress Indira Devakirubai, who received the gifts, was thankful for the parents’ efforts to improve the quality of their education.

“Parents are doing everything to make their children’s lives better here. We want our children to have facilities as good as the private schools,” she said
tearfully.
