Hyderabad: Health minister Dr Laxma Reddy visited Osmania General Hospital on Monday and inspected the OGH mortuary, cold storage rooms, corpses storage rooms, freezers and also took a review of the forensic department as they want to have a new elaborate mortuary policy for the state of Telangana.

Presently, the burden of post mortem and storage of corpses is with Gandhi Hospital and OGH which bears a huge burden as other centres have not been developed. There is no proper room to store unclaimed dead bodies. The cold storage facilities are also not working to the desired levels due to which there have been complaints from time to time.

Due to these problems there is a need develop the mortuaries and provide extra storage space and freezers so that they can be kept properly. At present, there are mortuaries in 113 hospitals in the state but their capacity is a major concern. There are 50 hearses which are being used for carrying bodies.

Dr Nagendra, superintendent of Osmania General Hospital said, “The mortuary department requires a complete overhaul as there is a need for expansion of capacity. We need to develop the facilities and the government’s move is in the right direction.”

As far as the crumbling infrastructure of the hospital is concerned, Dr Reddy promised the joint action committee of OGH that he will again visit the hospital on April 21st.
