Thrissur: The dreaded WannaCry ransomeware hit 23 computers in the personal department of the railway sub-divisional office in Palakkad  on Tuesday noon.  The railways said the core data involving booking, crew management, centre for railway information systems (CRIS), freight, pay roll and salary along with all other operations were  intact.

The affected personal systems were not connected to the central networks and use Windows operating system. The computers using dangles (USB devices) for internet were  infected by the ransomware. The personal department uses computers instead of a typewriter and all the letters drafted here are backed up as hard copies, officials at the division said.

“From 2017 onwards, the new database is centrally kept in the server at CRIS in New Delhi and all the servers are running on Sun Solaris and Linux operating system,” PRO of Palakkad division M.K. Gopinath said.

Sources close to the IT wing of railways said that they would wait and watch as the core data was unaffected in the ransomeware attack.
