Decision on quarrying after study: Seeram Sambasiva Rao
“The rights of the residents will not be ignored and a decision will be taken only after hearing the views of all parties concerned†he said.
Kozhikode: District collector Seeram Sambasiva Rao has said that a decision on allowing quarrying at Chengottumala, Koyilandy taluk, will be taken only after considering all aspects raised by the local residents there.
He gave this assurance during a meeting held with the action council and representatives of local self-government in the presence of MLA Purushan Kadalundi after visiting the spot in Chengottumala village on Thursday.
“The rights of the residents will not be ignored and a decision will be taken only after hearing the views of all parties concerned” he said.
The Chengottumala Samrakshana Samiti, an action council of local residents and environmental activists, had launched an indefinite sit-in on the premises of the Kottur grama panchayat office last week against the reported plan of the industries department to conduct a new hearing on May 17 to consider the D&O licence application of a quarry firm at Chengottumala.
The collector along with his team visited the spot following the demand raised by the action committee which said that the district administration does not know the environmental issues faced by the people. The multi-crore project, which is supposed to come up at Chengottumala, will pose a threat to the environment.
