Hyderabad: Osmania University alumni set to protest renaming
Petitioners demanded that immediate steps should be taken to rescind the decision.
Hyderabad: Osmania University (OU) alumni to conduct a mass protest at the OU library during its name changing ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on Friday at 10 am.
Since the declaration of the name change, various alumni, historians, and members from the Nizam’s family have been writing to the Vice-chancellor of Osmania University, Chief Secretary S K Joshi, and Governor ESL Narasimhan to intervene and halt this move but to no avail.
An alumnus argued that the name change trend had to end and that miscreants should not be allowed to change the existing name of the Osmania University library. The university, however, has decided to change the name of the library to Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Library following the appeals that it has received from student bodies over the past four years.
The alumni have also signed a petition in which it was mentioned that their “strong opposition is based on the firm belief that a change of name does nothing to advance academic excellence nor does it honour the memory and vision of both the founder of Osmania University or Dr Ambedkar, one of India’s most illustrious sons.”
Petitioners demanded that immediate steps should be taken to rescind the decision.
