Chennai: An elderly woman from Pudukottai approached the City Police commissioner's office on Friday requesting the police to rescue her daughter from Saudi Arabia, where the woman has reportedly been sold to a sheik's family.

Panchavarnam, who works at the Government Hospital in Pudukottai, claimed that her daughter Santhana Kaleesuwari (30) was lured to work as a domestic help in the Gulf nation and sold to a large family there.

In her complaint, Panchavarnam claims that they were approached by an agent in Tiruchy who promised to get a job as a domestic help with a salary of Rs 21,000 and also claimed that we do not have to pay any money to get the job.

The family had to bear the expenses only for the visa charges after which they were lodged at a guesthouse in Triplicane on June 4. Panchavarnam said that the guesthouse owner too counselled her daughter and she was sent to Saudi Arabia on June 5.

However, five days later, Santhana Kaleesuwari calls her mother and informs her that she is being ill treated by the family and is made to work for long hours without rest. “The owner says that I have been sold to the family,”  Panchavarnam quoted her daughter as saying.

The woman requested the police to take action against the agents in Tiruchy and the guesthouse owner in Triplicane and help retrieve her daughter. Triplicane police have received the petition and would question the Chennai man who facilitated the travel, police said.
