Thanjavur: Delta farmers to intensify stir against hydrocarbon projects
Maniarasan also said that Kuzhu members will strongly oppose construction of a dam at Mekedatu in Karnataka.
THANJAVUR: The ‘Cuavery Urimai Meetpu Kuzhu’ has decided to organise sit-in agitations at various places in the Cauvery delta districts on July 2 protesting against the proposed hydrocarbon projects and urging the Tamil Nadu government to get the due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka.
Announcing this to presspersons on Sunday, P. Maniarasan, coordinator of the Kuzhu said that a resolution to this effect was passed at a meeting of various organisations here on Saturday night.
He said that agitation will be held in a place central to four or five villages and nearly 1,000 to 2,000 persons are expected to participate in each centre.
“The central government is planning to conduct auctions for taking hydrocarbon from Villupuram to Ramanathapuram and it should stop this forthwith and cancel the proposed hydrocarbon projects,” he demanded.
Maniarasan also said that Kuzhu members will strongly oppose construction of a dam at Mekedatu in Karnataka. If Karnataka government starts construction work, then members of the Kuzhu would go to Mekedatu and stop the work, he warned.
